• Angkor Wat Sunrise

Arrive before dawn at Angkor Wat, a temple complex so huge it was believed in olden times to be a city created by gods, just about at crack of dawn. Built as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu in the 12th century, Angkor Wat later became a Buddhist sanctuary. Enjoy watching the sunrise crawl across the Cambodian jungle, the temple inflames with fiery hues.

• Baiyon Temple

Bayon Temple, constructed in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, is a unique temple with more than 200 huge carved heads of smiling faces. Some feel they are those of the king himself; others see a fusion between Buddha and various deities. In comparison to Angkor Wat in all its grandeur, Bayon offers a closer look. Stroll across silent courtyards, wander along intricate corridors, and get up close to those enigmatic smiles.

• Ta prohm temple

Ta Prohm, unlike most of the Angkor Wat temples, is still largely overgrown. It was constructed in the 12th century as a Buddhist monastery by King Jayavarman VII to be dedicated to his mother. Fast track into the 15th century and Ta Prohm was completely swallowed by the jungle. Today, huge trees weave through the ruins, their roots clutching stones like ancient serpents. 

• Old Market

Bag offbeat souvenirs and get a pulse of Siem Reap in the Old Market. This dizzy, labyrinthine maze of stalls just explodes with color and energy for treasure hunting such as silk scarves, hand-carved wooden elephants, or glittering silver jewelry. • The Killing Field

The Killing Fields, more popularly known as Wat Thmey Pagoda, is a serious but important location dedicated to the memories of the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979, it is where thousands were executed and buried in mass graves. A stupa today, filled with skulls and bones, makes for a fitting reminder of the event. Not easy to do, as one walks past displays of photographs and reads survivor accounts, yet crucial to be able to understand a lot of recent Cambodian history and pay respect to those who lost their lives.

The true heart of Siem Reap—Pub Street is filled with swirling neon lights, thumping open-air bars. In the day, it's just another quiet lane. As the sun starts to set, Pub Street goes from zero to party heaven in a matter of minutes. Enjoy a draft beer for $0.50, indulge in scrumptious Cambodian food.
